Jets Lock Up All-Pro Muhammad Wilkerson With 5 Year Extension

The 2011 first round pick signed a 5 year 85 million dollar contract to keep him in a Jets uniform through 2020.

As the 4 P.M. deadline for a Wilkerson extension approached, the chances of a deal being struck looked bleak. Until, shortly after 4 P.M. the Jets and other media outlets tweeted a deal had been reached. General Manager Mike Maccagnan did it again. Honestly, I didn’t think the Jets would budge, and let Big Mo play this season out on the 18.8 million dollar franchise tag.

The 2011 first round pick inked a 5 year 85 million dollar contract to keep him in a Jets uniform through 2020. The lucrative deal will make him 37 million in the first two years and 54 million through the third. Wilkerson’s deal nets him more money per year than J.J. Watt’s extension in 2014.

Big Mo has been nothing short of a stud for the Jets, holding down the defensive line since he was drafted out of Temple 5 years ago. I couldn’t be happier to have 96 back as the heart and soul of the front 7. This situation could have gotten ugly as there were rumors Mo was unhappy and willing to hold out during training camp. We didn’t need this situation to linger into August, as Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is still unsigned.

Leading by example, the two time all-pro has a motor that just doesn’t stop, setting the tone for the rest of the young talented Jets front. Coming off a 12 sack 2015 season, his 28.5 in the last three years ranks third among 3-4 d-lineman. The only worry, Wilkerson’s coming off a broken leg that happened in the debacle from the last game of the season up in Buffalo. Word is he should be ready to go at some point during training camp, and he is ahead of schedule.

The 26-year-old had this message for Jets nation.

Players across the league chimed in to congratulate Big Mo’ on the new deal.

Congrats to Big Mo, it’s an honor to watch you suit up for Gang Green week in and week out, you deserve every penny. Hopefully, this is a sign the Jets will get a deal done with Ryan Fitzpatrick before training camp opens at the end of the month.

See you week 1.
