This Is Us Season 3 Episode 15 Recap: A Bottle Episode

This is tough. Last night’s episode was not my cup of tea. I found myself losing attention easily and that’s not due to the fact that Odell was traded to the Giants.

– Last night’s episode of This Is Us is called a “bottle episode.” A bottle episode is a set of main characters in a single space for an entire episode. It was originally created to save money on the budget in between expensive episodes. However, it’s turned into a way to creatively tell a story in condensed setting.

– The setting for the bottle episode was the hospital waiting room as the Pearson family awaits news on Kate and the status of her baby. Every major character in the family is in the room and all are dealing with personal issues. Kevin has relapsed and continues to drink in the hospital with a water bottle full of vodka. Zoe can’t talk to Kevin because he’s shutting her out of his problems. Randall and Beth are continuing their downward spiral as they fight over if Beth can teach dance since Randall is now an elected official. Rebecca is almost ghostlike because of her bad experiences in waiting rooms (i.e. Jack’s death). Miguel is still not accepted in the family as Kevin and Randall lash out at him. This all happens while Kate and the baby are fighting for their lives. Priorities, Pearsons. Priorities.

– I appreciated the idea of staying in one setting and timeline to stress the importance of this moment and how it affects each character, but this episode didn’t succeed in furthering the plot. All it did was escalate everyone’s personal problems and provided no solutions other than stating that Kate and the premature baby are ok for now. The episode wasn’t a “whole lot of nothing,” but every storyline went back to square one. Kevin is drinking, Randall and Beth are fighting, and Toby and Kate are in danger of losing their premature baby. I wouldn’t say I’m excited for the next episode after watching last night.

– That’s all I have to say about this episode. Here’s to hoping for a rebound episode next week because SOPHIE IS BACK!
